HIGH ADVENTURE at Camp Makualla offers a variety of program and adventures for youth and leaders. Many of these activities are done outside of camp. The image above is an actual Troop from camp whitewater rafting! Our High Adventure Staff takes pride in providing each participant a Mountain-Top Scouting Experience during these amazing adventures. Some of these programs are available during open program time for all scouts, some require that your patrol or unit sign up in advance. Sign-ups happen during Sunday's 4:00pm Scoutmaster & Sr. Patrol Leader  meeting or through our High Adventure Staff.

Camp Makualla Ultimate Adventure is our high adventure program for older scouts who no longer need merit badge summer camp. It can be compared to attending a BSA high adventure base. Specially designed for older Scouts ages 14-17 and Ventures, the adventures are fun but offer many challenging elements. The Ultimate Adventure takes place during the entire week with Camp Makualla serving as your base camp, where you’ll return daily before dinner and evening programs. The schedule of activities will vary each week, but all Ultimate Adventure participants will participate in the following High Adventure programs:

The Simax Beach Overnight Canoe Trip has been a staple activity of Camp Makualla for over 50 years! Unit’s or Patrols leave in the evening on a 1 hour canoe trip across Crescent Lake, where they camp for the night. Because of high waves in the evening, this is absolutely a high adventure activity. Staff drops your gear off at your campsite in the evening and Scouts canoe their gear back across the lake in the morning before breakfast. It’s a blast and all scouts can participate! This is a free activity.

HIKING HIGH ADVENTURES

Cowhorn Mountain, is our “tooth of time” (Philmont). Pictured above, this hike is a staple of Camp Makualla and our most famous and popular hike. The hike is 12 miles round trip, reaching an elevation of 7,664 ft. The hike is a medium level hike and most Scouts can handle it fine. All of our hikes are available Monday through Friday. See leaders guide for more information.

Fawn Lake is an 8 mile round trip hike. It is fairly easy, gently sloping through trees until you reach the lake.

Diamond Peak, is an 8,744 ft cascade volcano which dominate this wilderness. It can be viewed from camp as you look across the lake. This is a very difficult hike and is only available once the snow has melted (normally not available in July). The hike is 22 miles round trip. Units who do this hike often backpack, camp and take 2 full days to complete it. Units who wish to do this hike should be experienced hikers.

SPELUNKING HIGH ADVENTURE

Central Oregon is home to many historic caves. Spelunking is High Adventure caving and the Scouts will most likely be the only people in the cave. A helmet and headlamp will be provided. Scout will explore these deep and dark caves with our High Adventure Staff. Depending on the speed of your group you will explore 2-3 caves. This high adventure is part of Camp Makualla’s Ultimate Adventure program. For Scouts who wish to participate via a-la-carte the cost is $55 (while space allows).

SMITH ROCK CLIMBING HIGH ADVENTURE
Smith Rock Climbing
This is where it all began! Smith Rock is widely considered the birthplace of modern American sport rock climbing with literally thousands of established routes including the famous Monkey Face. The area provides a variety of challenges for all skill levels and our High Adventure staff will choose routes specifically tailored to the Scouts attending. The area is on the Oregon desert plateau, which means the scenery is completely different than what you find around Camp.

In addition to Climbing, Scouts will take the Misery Ridge Hike to the top of Smith Rock. This Hike is 3 miles round trip and is one of the most popular hiking trails in Oregon. From the top the vista is AMAZING! Bring your camera and get great pictures of multiple white toped volcanoes including Mount Hood, Mount Jefferson, Three Sisters, Mount Bachelor and more!
